I am not planning to travel anywhere as I have been doing nothing BUT travelling (although in business) since November last year. My feet might get restless after a couple of weeks though, but this time I won't travel to far away places but settle for being close to home. Bliss.

I will also try to stay off line as much as possible, but this is easier said than done. I have developed a serious habit of checking what's going on with You almost daily and my curiosity will not take holidays. I am also a real news junkie and I need to know what's happening in the world although nothing much is happening with me. One very bad habit of mine is to check my work email every time I get online, but I guess we all have our faults.

Also, it's now official - I am changing jobs within my company and will start in a new position after my holiday. I will move from my company's media relations team to our environmental team and just could not be happier. Trying to save the planet for a job (well, sort of...) is what I call a meaningful thing to do. And hey, not travelling by air this holiday means I will also do my tiny little bit of not causing any more CO2 emissions than what I already have this year..

With this I wish you a wonderful summer - or early spring if you happen to be on the southern hemisphere. Have fun and take care!

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBQoWVVXyKF2oNZ8kcNylFKH-I_VKSQF4guwnS1SoctXOz0ljIzIO4j7bQgUt6Pe4U2qbmGbdwFxm0Y1IXm_4-006tFcxI6-lWZkPMCwbLkf-XAW8BnCgqtz7vmI9jtdWr2b_fZ2IGEhWr/s400/04032006128.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5082508303926359362" />Jiihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01466971588386008814noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4223911867308645243.post-81770940582211915172007-06-25T10:00:00.000+00:002008-12-11T14:44:30.716+00:00Vacca foeda?I was very pleased to find a comment from Denise Rich on one of my earlier posts about cows.

Denise is a cow painter and I asked her what made her to start painting cows in the first place. This is what she said:

"The easiest answer to why cows is that they just make me smile, I love their faces, their demeanor, their attitude, the fact that they are not in too much of a hurry for anything. I just can't look into the eyes of a cow and not be intrigued, they are much more intelligent than they are given credit for I believe. I just can't help but smile and even laugh when I am with them."

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPZMYhaoFViyH3Wk-6rwTpM0CC9YZ-vNSwELj3HtzsKuL-ZPlH5JIMTnasx8dOIKPOFnqLGKfnImrZzQArZpLJEcU3lzuKq54jlWum0fWaFdO2h9bsvkWTC0Ps3qzmS9KA6lMSgLQjg8km/s400/Wide+Load+Ahead+by+Denise+Rich.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079940095560895058" />
"Wide Load Ahead"

I can really relate to all of her reasons. That's why I like cows too.

I have heard that that in high tech farms the cows can decide themselves when they want to get milked - so it's not any more necessary to wake up at 5.00 am to have that done. They can have a sleep in too! I also know that some clever people have developed machines through which the cows can walk to have their backs scratched. Sweet life.

The sad fact however is that cows do not get to live a full long life but are slaughtered when they are not productive anymore. This happens in their teens. Given a chance a cow could live up to 25 years.

Whilst I can naturally understand that, it still makes me sad. And I'm ashamed to admit that I'm not a vegetarian. Talking about double standards...

Nevertheless, my dream is one day to own a cow, who could live a long and happy life in a farm with back scratching machine and no alarm clocks. I realise that I will never own a farm myself but I would be willing to pay for the B&B for Mrs Cow if someone would be willing to have a long term lodger like that. I could then drive to the farm with a a friend. "Look at those cows. Do you see the one, with a happy smile on her face? She's mine. The sun rose in Helsinki at 3.56 am this morning and will not set until 10.49 pm. That's almost nineteen hours of daylight!

Midsummer is one of the biggest celebrations in Finland. The cities get deserted as everyone heads to their summer cottage by the lake.

If you have a life list - things to do before you die - you should add the Finnish midsummer to the list of things to experience. And so were the hyeenas, zebras, antilopes, giraffes, elephants and lots of other fauna.

I am naturally talking about last night's performance of the Lion King in the Montecasino Teatro in Johannesburg.

The show is finally brought to Africa and rightly so, as there would not be a lion king without Africa.

I have always loved the story and the characters in it and the show lived up to all my expectations. The costumes were truly awesome and it was just so entertaining in every way.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNuEJkXeiGeDFauHow5cPWr368qxDZymxDsOIT6GngpXzbBeIRskQ9c27zqKj2Bk5tqVb3vgwfSxMJ1wXhvUwFxM6dfZQZEfPNn5OOHBRerC9NvQdBXs6DN9BxtsRxQVUs14oj8IjRVXRv/s400/Lion+King.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5075451588448602610" />

I'm a also big fan of the dialogue in the story, and this is one to remember:

Young Simba: Hey, Uncle Scar. It sure was pretty.

A place like this is somewhat over my personal price range for a night in a hotel, but I thought I show you what you get if money isn't the issue. Apparently the latest celebrity to stay there was Jane Seymore.

<img style="cursor:pointer; The exhibition was quite small, bu it did have some interesting decors. My favorite room was the one on these two first photos, put together by a company called White on White. It's been freezing this week with temperatures below zero some mornings. Being Finn people say that I should be used to these kind of temperatures. The thing is that in Finland houses are build to take the cold - there is proper insulation and heating is standard thing in every house. I don't think one gets used to cold but in some places you are just better equipped to take it.

I prefer the warmer temperatures but we certainly have had it pretty this week.

Jiihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01466971588386008814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4223911867308645243.post-73065563321025964092007-05-21T15:30:00.000+00:002008-12-11T14:44:38.746+00:00On the hot spot<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdd63Hejm6KgknXkdh2jOnlzj-Yf3-RjJkwDZ-yKWktujWfFXFpajaB2Uolfra-mqKkTGK5hhPfq1uxkm9wWJKZVOoR2ozzR729ZuNkaG3c0QeMlFr-8ZR_qaY77uJuTnrFPMswhmd8WA6/s400/Hot+spot.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5067040404778826754" />

One of my favorite design stores back home, Skanno, has rolled our their summer range, garden furniture and the likes. They would not sell the pillow covers separately, so I needed to get the actual pillows inside as well. But those I will leave behind. This and over 3000 other pieces of art - paintings, graphics, photographs, sculptures - are looking for a loving and caring homes.

The art society of Helsinki in Finland are making it easy for people to get to know and buy art. For a monthly fee, from 10 to 200 euros depending on the price of the piece, you can borrow the one you like. If you don't like the way it looks at your home, you can simply return it when ever you want, but in case you would like to keep it, you just keep on paying the monthly instalments (mind you, interest free) and when it's all paid - voilà, the artwork is yours. Naturally you can pay everything up front too.

They really have something for any one's taste. For graphic lovers, how about this one by Anita Jensen. "When this is finished ..." and "After I have done that...". You might be one of those people too?

But what comes to decorating my apartment, it literally needs to be "when I'm back home".

In between Morocco and South Africa, where I arrived just this morning, I had a short break back home in Finland. It was so very nice to be home again, surrounded by things I had chosen instead of living in furnished apartments in which the decorating part obviously had not been very high on the priority list.

Being far away from home is hard with a decorating bug and at least I can be comforted with some great exotic finds. But being not able to DO anything long distance is just killing me.

All I have are the photos which continue to inspire and give fuel for my imagination. Why is there 'good' in goodbye? What's good about it? I am not good at goodbyes at all.

Since arriving in late January I have developed an addiction to couscous and the fresh vegetables from the market. I've learned to speak a few words of Arabic and the people in my local bakery seem to be so impressed that they now treat me like a star. And I've learned to appreciate a good haggle. What do you mean you have fixed prices?

Surely I have complained about the chaotic traffic, the exhaust fumes from cars that make breathing difficult, the cold floors and breaks in electricity in my apartment, the men who harass me on the streets. But today people actually gave me way in the hectic morning rush hour traffic and I swear that the honking of the horns had a more friendlier sound. When was the last time I have received this many compliments from the strangers in the streets? The guy yesterday evening; il me dit que je suis belle.

I have not had enough time to do half of the things I planned to do or go to places I wanted to go. I was lazy and thought there would be time. I don't know what happened, I was busy making other plans.

I know this is not a goodbye but see you later. A part of my heart will always beat for Morocco and the wonderful people I have had the privilege to get to know. I hope I will be coming back.

A soppy post indeed.

--
PS For some great photos of Morocco, check drewnoakes' flickr site Jiihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01466971588386008814noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4223911867308645243.post-36884320906106048392007-04-06T12:50:00.000+00:002008-12-11T14:44:43.502+00:00Out of Africa<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc2szg5xLYVvIJo87f916sLLzWQMAJ-ClYHqDOXMx_UYVFXygujSfBgehyA3xWP_neKDQCwVVALf9hDUn_a0oGAycTt7LXRVVqjZt8bidj1gZaGS_ns_Qnon7SOE3D3Z_cZhWBFHnyv9fr/s400/IMG_4488.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5050301600313777394" />

"There is something about safari life that makes you forget all your sorrows and feel as if you had drunk half a bottle of champagne - bubbling over with heartfelt gratitude for being alive."
-Karen Blixen-

I wish I had a farm in Africa.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVLImf_7dVjQHuOUfuW57ZGkzb-58hnrFj0JKC-WH2zRZVkItV9NqySsTCKxMw_RTJTBJUFAnjpksGcG9BPVXNSIfCiCTLHgjvaKYcIFA7Uhb51Lk7_dXDv2zqjUJ8HcR5fC9KRM7ELXIb/s400/IMG_4532.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5050301866601749762" />Jiihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01466971588386008814noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4223911867308645243.post-34852444774067781212007-03-30T13:35:00.000+00:002008-12-11T14:44:43.646+00:00Perks of the job<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1h6MiOThZzJnWiC78CnMFJXgbDcJuJUboYxkv3CSCwXOS37zQQ2wp_qT9s22WCu73eK257GdjzcVvoB6M7qMEsOkEbCFluOxNCN5JA6htPpqKSTqcCfjo-3ItB59g82JwYxHwxC4lstsn/s400/Naivasha.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5047711069685545202" />
Unlike many people, I do not dislike travelling by air or indeed airports. I admit there are many airports which would be great candidates for "pimp my airport" show on MTV. But mostly I am just intrigued by all the fellow passengers. Where are they all going and why? You always recognise the people going for a holiday and the honeymooners, people travelling in business and so on. But then there are lot of people whose appearance does not tell you anything at all. Why is that wrinkled 90 year old lady travelling from London to Prague? Does she live there? And why is that pregnant woman travelling alone? Where is her husband? Does she have a husband? Is she fit to fly? When is her baby due? And what on earth is that man carrying in that strangely shaped box? So many untold stories!

Friends of mine who do not have similar kind of job to mine where international travel is needed say they envy me for being able to do that. I have not been able to fully convince them yet that in most cases business travel is highly overrated. You might be going to a far away, exotic destination, but if all you see is the airport and couple of meeting rooms, you could practically be anywhere. Then there are the connecting flights you miss, the lost luggage, the jet lags you suffer and the 12 hour flights when you are seated next to a person whose personal hygiene leaves a lot to be hoped for. Envy that?

Of course there are perks too. This time it's the actual destination in the heart of Africa, Kenya. It's a long way to go, but the photo I have of our end destination somehow tells me it's all going to be very good. No complaints!Jiihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01466971588386008814noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4223911867308645243.post-20352210059384298642007-03-19T18:17:00.000+00:002008-12-11T14:44:44.223+00:00You can call me stupid cow<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIqc1WzCtR1PxeMFt0OZ2N1QSqyA6n2YkTdu5muAU2Gsv8XpctIO4SfQI9FL0JPUp-TaEx-GLeqo4Vex3VspkmoB0rFPxvex70M2gy3zf42ZFi6nEJY7waBX5jg4sJO0PeYYT7PE1XhTK7/s400/RosamundFace160x120cm%2520copy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5043670831848766882" />

Everyone who knows me, knows that I love cows. And that I would like to have one. A real one, that is.

But I found something almost just as good, and maybe a little bit more realistic a couple of years ago on a trip to Brighton, UK when I visited a lovely artist led gallery and studio called Two Kats and a Cow. The gallery belongs to painters Katty McMurray, Kathryn Matthews and John Marshall.

John is the Cow Man. He creates these amazing cow paintings which are so fascinating and manage to capture that very essence of being a cow. Or what I imagine being a cow would be like. You know what I mean, I'm sure.

I have not have the honor to meet the Cow Man himself but anyone who can create the cow paintings like he does is very high on my list of people I would like to meet. The dinner would be on me and I am sure we would share an interesting discussion about these wonderfully laidback creatures.

One day I hope to have Buster, Rosamund or any other of these lovely creatures staring back at me from the wall.

Being in Morocco right now and seeing the old fashion way of transportation of goods on the streets every day, I am quickly developing a similar fascination for donkeys. Anyone know a donkey painter?

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj3S5J5XIcUgHYHiDQ7hURN5S9-HbyWVH-mpuRYReBbh4WJBkew2rTqLf1q6KXXR9RKiuwP04g67KJbZYTl7q9d_mbB2ZJzTVuvDgLKwTqCjE5KtaDEAcmpZfwAZ7r7qBzi-dJAhZ2H9Za/s400/BUSTERScreenprint.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5043670831848766898" />Jiihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01466971588386008814noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4223911867308645243.post-40369107229363729902007-03-19T07:58:00.000+00:002007-03-19T17:12:49.839+00:00My Visual DNA - What's yours?<embed allowScriptAccess="never" allowNetworking="internal" enableJavaScript="false" src="http://dna.imagini.net/friends/swf/widget.swf" quality="best" bgcolor="#000000" width="340" height="240" name="widget" align="middle" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" flashvars="bgcolor=#000000&i1=http://dna.imagini.net/i/RESIZE_-5A36BB17.jpeg&c1=I like to create by touch and feel&i2=http://dna.imagini.net/i/RESIZE_7F9480E3.jpeg&c2=I sing out aloud when home alone.&i3=http://dna.imagini.net/i/RESIZE_-3246D42F.jpeg&c3=A girl needs to shop.&i4=http://dna.imagini.net/i/RESIZE_23F0F190.jpeg&c4=Reminds me of the childhood summers.
